Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to question specific decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
